The concept for Damariscotta Green is built on the belief that our community will benefit from an intergenerational greenspace where all are welcome. A wide, graded walking trail will wind around the property, allowing visitors to spot birds and other wildlife within the native vegetation, find stillness in the sunken reflection garden, or commune for outdoor classes. Located within the center of town, recreation will occur without the worry of vehicles. Walking footpaths on Chapman Street and Vine Street will create the perfect recreation loop for walkers and explorers alike, whether you're visiting for a spell, or lucky enough to call midcoast Maine home. Gathering places like a shady gazebo, nature nooks, and quiet woodland benches will be available for respite, or reconnecting with friends and nature. We look forward to seeing you on the trail!
"Downtown Conservation Opportunity: Days Cove The watercourse, which includes the wetlands adjacent to Dollar Tree, the stream draining under Main Street, and the tidal pond under Bristol Road connecting to Days Cove, is a valuable natural asset, due to its proximity to downtown. The protection of this area has environmental and social benefits because green space in and near the downtown area is extremely limited. This area could also provide a pedestrian path connecting Bristol Road with Main Street and possibly extend to Chapman Street with a path to the Damariscotta Historical Society (formerly Mobius) property."
~Damariscotta Comprehensive Town Plan
This plot of land has long been neglected by all but wildlife. So, we'll restore the land to better support wildlife and our human connection to nature. A team of volunteers is ready to replace invasive plants species, and guide native pollinator plantings to support birds, bees, and butterflies. The Damariscotta Green is where conservation and recreation will mindfully meet and overlap.
Enjoy the graded walking trail that will loop around the property, with existing access via Chapman Street and an additional footpath access via Vine Street. This 1.7 acre loop is meant to be an immersive experience. Citizens will find respite from cars and traffic, and have a place to reconnect with nature and community. The planned trail will be minimum of 8-feet wide and designed to accommodate people with varying mobilities. Additional access via Coastal Marketplace is an additional goal, and part of Phase 2 planning.
Designed to highlight the bounty of our local area, minimal-impact "nature rooms" will be created throughout the property. On your walk, you may discover bird sanctuaries, wildflower gardens, local art, a central gazebo, and more. Community ideas for these specialty spaces include:
~ A wooden boat built by teens at The Carpenter's Boat Shop, installed for use as a toddler play area.
~ An educational kiosk highlighting the value of wetlands.
~ Wildflower gardens of forget-me-nots, lupines, Queen Anne's lace and other perennials.
~ Athletic and engagement space for teens.
~ An artist memorial for veterans, and an area of reflection for departed loved ones.
~ A Little Free Library focusing on conservation and mindfulness for readers of any age.
~ A sunken reflection garden. A bird and butterfly garden.
All specialty areas will be constructed using sustainable, locally-grown materials, art, and heart.
